Romare Bearden was one of the most prominent African American artists of the 20th century.

Romare Bearden's work is described as Visual Jazz because he was a master of the collage. Bearden's collages and paintings possess a stunning humanity. In his work, Romare Bearden aimed to do nothing less than "redefine the image of man" in terms of the African-American experience.

The documentary is narrated by jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, who masterfully draws parallels between jazz and the art of Romare Bearden.
